Am I drinking too much?

Am I drinking too much?

Many people can be unsure about how much they're drinking, if it’s too much and what to do about it. Sometimes drinking can ‘creep up’ on you and over time you could be drinking more than you wanted to.
The best thing to do is to stick to the low risk guidelines:
  • It's safest not to drink more than 14 units per week. 14 units means roughly six pints of lager or one and a half bottles of wine.
  • Don’t ‘save up’ your units, spread them out over three or more days.
  • Make sure you have a least two days off.
  • If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, the safest approach is not to drink alcohol at all, to keep risks to your baby to a minimum.

What does a unit look like?

One unit is about 250ml of 4% beer or a very small 76ml glass of 13% wine.

What does the low risk guidelines of 14 units look like?

Fourteen units is roughly equivalent to 6 pints of 4% beer or 6 glasses (175ml) of 13% wine.

If you’re regularly drinking more than the low risk guidelines it could be time to think about why and what you can do to cut down. You can check your drinking via our Alcohol Test, it’s super quick and confidential and will give you further advice on how to make positive changes.
